History of the Police in Suriname, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba
A four-volume ‘history of the police in the Netherlands’ appeared in 2007. This publication is the result of a painstaking research project under the supervision of prof.dr. Cyrille Fijnaut (Tilburg University). This project is being complemented by studies into the histories of the police in former Dutch colonies. The historiography on Indonesia before its independence was carried out by dr. Marieke Bloembergen, is all but finished and to be published in the second half of 2008. Remains to be investigated the history of the police in the Dutch Caribbean, viz. Suriname until it gained its independence in 1975, and the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba until this very day.
Under the supervision of prof.dr. Gert J. Oostindie, director of KITLV, the complementary volume will be realized. The research and writing involved, will be carried out by dr. Aart G. Broek and dr. Ellen Klinkers. The former focuses on the Dutch Antilles and Aruba, and the latter on Suriname.
Research will involve exploring public and private archives and libraries, both in the Netherlands and in Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Moreover, ‘oral history’ will yield ample and relevant information. In the various parts of the Kingdom and in Suriname willing informants are expected to be consulted. The research is to result in one volume, which will in fact comprise two parts, one on Suriname and one on the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Undoubtedly the colonial context and the administrative structures, either well established or malfunctioning, will show resemblances to quite some extent. However, the histories in the former colonies are bound to differ greatly, adding to this the, perhaps at times idiosyncratic, histories of the individual islands. The histories will be joined into one volume, in which the introduction and the epilogue will glue the different parts together, highlighting resemblances and differences, their common structures and distinctive exclusivity.
The project started on April 1, 2008, at the KITLV, with a preliminary four month exploratory pilot. The project, including the writing, is expected to take three years. It is being financed and sponsored by various Dutch governmental, semi- and non-governmental organisations, inter alia, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Affairs and the Royal Marechaussee.
The project will benefit from the assistance of an advisory committee with members from the various countries and from relevant fields of interest.
Project period: April 1, 2008 – March 31, 2011.
