26 Jul Article on the number of Indonesian casualties of war, 1945-1949

During the Decolonization War in Indonesia (1945-1949), the Netherlands initiated two large scale military operations and was also engaged in smaller actions on a daily basis. The number of Dutch military casualties in this war has been established fairly precisely. We remain in the dark, however, about  the number of Indonesian casualties, and neither the Dutch nor the Indonesian official estimates are anything other than very rough guesses. This prompted KITLV-researchers Christiaan Harinck, Nico van Horn, and Bart Luttikhuis to delve into the Dutch National Archives for some exploratory research, in order to provide better figures. The results of their work was published this week in de Groene Amsterdammer. The bare figures on which this article is based can be found here.

(In Dutch) Tijdens de dekolonisatieoorlog in Indonesië (1945-1949) voerde Nederland twee grootschalige militaire offensieven uit (de zogenaamde ‘politionele acties’) , waarvan de eerste deze maand 70 jaar geleden plaats vond. Het aantal Nederlandse militaire slachtoffers van deze offensieven en de aanzienlijke gevechtshandelingen daaromheen weten we vrij precies. Voor het aantal Indonesische slachtoffers van deze oorlog zijn er daarentegen slechts grove schattingen, zowel in Nederland als Indonesië. Reden voor de KITLV-onderzoekers Christiaan Harinck, Nico van Horn  en Bart Luttikhuis om het Nationaal Archief in te duiken voor verkennend telwerk.
