18 Dec New publication: ‘Indentured labour’
By Rosemarijn Hoefte: ‘Indentured labour’, in: Karin Hofmeester and Marcel van der Linden, Handbook Global History of Work, pp. 375-388. Berlin: De Gruijter, 2017.
This reference work studies the global history of work and labor relations. Rosemarijn Hoefte’s chapter discusses indentured labor, emphasizing that this form of bound labor was not an intermediate phase in a teleological development from slavery to free labor. It existed in places without a history of slavery and in other settings where enslaved, free, and indentured laborers worked side by side. She shows that the enforcement of labor contracts, the quality of indentured life in general, and labor conditions in particular, varied across time and space.
