Koloniale stuiptrekking: Het experiment Suriname in de jaren 1930
Begin jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw veroorzaakten economische misère en werkloosheid sociale onrust in Suriname. In tegenstelling tot andere Caraïbische koloniën vond in Suriname een conservatieve backlash (tegenbeweging) plaats. In haar oratie op 16 maart a.s. aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam,  gaat Rosemarijn Hoefte in op de discrepantie tussen het Nederlands koloniale beleid en het groeiende Surinaamse bewustzijn in de dertiger jaren.

The last convulsions of colonialism: The Suriname experiment in the 1930s
In 1930s Suriname a dire economic situation and unemployment caused social unrest. In contrast to other Caribbean colonies, in Suriname this led to a conservative backlash or counter movement. In her inaugural lecture on 16 March at the University of Amsterdam, Rosemarijn Hoefte focuses on the discrepancy between Dutch colonial policy and the growing consciousness surrounding Surinamese identity in the 1930s.
