Seminar | Islam in Indonesia, or Indonesian Islam? Some reflections | Carool Kersten

Abstract
Despite having written three monographs featuring Islam in Indonesia, I still hesitate to call myself an Indonesianist, mainly because of the way I have entered the field. Against the background of my academic wanderings through Arabic & Islamic Studies, philosophy, Southeast Asian and Religious Studies, I reflect on the expansion and contraction of my studies in Southeast Asian Islam. I will focus in particular on almost ten years of researching the intellectual history of contemporary Indonesian Islam and on writing a history of the underlying Islamization process, as part of my work as an academic in a Department of Theology and Religious Studies.

Speaker
Carool Kersten is Reader in the Study of Islam and the Muslim World at King’s College London, where he has been since 2007. Previously, he has also taught at Payap University in Thailand, the Open University (UK), and the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. He has been a research associate of the Institute of Philosophical Studies in Koper (Slovenia) and a fellow at the Asia Research Institute of the National University Singapore. He is the author or editor of eleven books, including Islam in Indonesia: The Contest for Society, Ideas and Values (2015) and A History of Islam in Indonesia (2017).
