Webinar | Menyelesaikan konflik kelapa sawit di Riau (Palm oil conflicts solutions)

The rapid expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia has numerous conflicts between rural communities and companies over (compensation for) access to land. In March 2019 KITLV started a research project to study these conflicts, with the aim to support rural communities, local authorities and the palm oil industries to find more effective ways to resolve these conflicts. Through a unique collaboration with Andalas University, Wageningen University and six Indonesian NGO’s, a team of 19 researchers was set up. These researchers managed to documented the trajectories and outcomes of 150 conflicts in West Sumatra, Riau, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.
In the coming month we will be presenting the first results coming out of this research project. In four webinars we will be discussing our findings with politicians, policy makers, academics and journalists from these four Indonesian provinces. With these webinars we also aim to provide local authorities with concrete recommendations for how these conflicts can be resolved more effectively.
