Webinar | Ecocide in West Papua | Fadjar Schouten-Korwa

In this webinar, Fadjar Schouten-Korwa will talk from her experiences as a human rights lawyer to explore legal avenues to address what she defines as the crime of ecocide. West Papua has the second largest rainforest after the Amazon and as such is one of the great biodiversity hotspots in the archipelago. It is also very rich in natural resources: the largest gold and third largest copper mine are located in the region. These resources are unfortunately no blessing but a curse for the Papuans. The exploitation of gold and copper has led to ecological disaster and threatens the livelihood of indigenous people. As Schouten-Korwa will argue, it is of great importance that these actions are prosecuted and that those responsible are held accountable for them.

Fadjar Schouten-Korwa, human rights lawyer, is an active advocate for the protection of human rights and rights of indigenous peoples. Fadjar is also  pro bono legal counselor for Papua Support Foundation committed to securing and promoting fundamental rights and freedoms of the people of West Papua — in particular, the Papua’s right of self-determination under international law. Further she is a member of the Advisory Board of the Stop Ecocide Campaign and member of the Prepatory Body of the Congress of Nations and States, scheduled for 2022.
