The shallow seas extending from the east coast of the Aru Islands have long contributed to world markets for pearl oyster, sea cucumbers, and other marine resources. At this eastern fringe, the Batuley make their livelihood harvesting these resources. In his recent book authored together with Dr Ross Gordon, Sonny Djonler details the extensive terminologies of the Batuley for marine biota and for the complex seascape environment in which they live. In this short book presentation, Djonler presents Pengetahuan Biologi Laut di daerah Batuley: Sebuah ilustrasi ensiklopedia published in 2016 by Yayasan Pustaka Obor.
Sonny Djonler studied marine biology at Pattimura University in Ambon. He has been working in the Aru Languages Documentation project funded by the Volkswagen Foundation to document his native language, Batuley.
