Seminar | The gamelan and the mango tree: Javaneseness and the senses in Suriname | Emily Hansell Clark

This seminar draws from archival and ethnographic dissertation research on the historical construction and present-day performance of Javanese ethnicity in Suriname and the Netherlands. I focus on the musical tradition of the gamelan, an ensemble of pitched percussion instruments that traveled along with indentured laborers from Java to Suriname in the period of 1890-1939.

Historica viert ‘100 Jaar Algemeen Kiesrecht’ in 2019 met deze speciale uitgave over de strijd voor vrouwenkiesrecht. In de geschiedschrijving kreeg deze strijd weinig aandacht en zelfs voor het juiste herdenkingsjaar in 2019 moest worden gestreden!

While work on gender and migration has grown significantly, it has mostly addressed the experiences of female migrants; the experiences of male migrants are still understudied. Even less attention has been paid to male migrants and their heterosexuality. This paper is interested in Chinese masculinities, which in the migration literature have been discussed largely in relation to migration to the West.
