The aim of the KITLV Fellowship Program is to provide space for mutual inspiration, collaboration, creation and co-creation within and beyond the institute’s main research themes and regions of interest. The program is a central feature of the institute’s international outlook and ambition as a global knowledge hub in Southeast Asian and Caribbean studies.
The KITLV Fellowship Program provides external scholars a space for creative, inspiring, and cutting edge collaborative research within and beyond the institute’s main research themes and regions of interest. We offer two types of fellowship:
Visiting Fellowships are funded fellowships. They are intended for researchers with a PhD in the humanities and/or social sciences and who are not (tax) residents of the Netherlands. Applicants are not required to have an affiliation at a university or a research institute. Visiting Fellows at the KITLV work on a publication or research project of their own choice in the fields of Southeast Asian or Caribbean Studies.
A total of eight fellowships with a duration of three months are available each year, covering the following periods:
• March-May
• June-August
• September-November
• December-February
Visiting fellowships come with office space at the KITLV, a return air or train fare, reimbursement of accommodation costs, reimbursement of local transport, and compensation for higher living costs in Leiden. Fellowships are not a salaried position.
The selection of applications takes place twice a year on the basis of an Open Call. Applications are assessed by a rotating committee composed of KITLV staff. Publication of the next call is in January 2025. If you are interested and eligible, please apply here:
Affiliated Fellowships are unfunded fellowships. They are intended for researchers whose work aligns with the KITLV’s research themes and who seek a dynamic research environment. Affiliated fellowships come with access to the collections of Leiden University and running invitations to KITLV meetings and events. They have a duration of between 1-6 months.
