A special issue of the Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Southeast Asia (Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde) is now available, in print and online in Open Access! ‘Performing the State’, edited by Jeremy J. Kingsley and Kari Telle, examining the performative aspects of governance and state-making in Southeast Asia. Combining historical and contemporary case studies, this collection brings together four examples of performative statecraft from Burma/Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia.
The Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Southeast Asia, is an interdisciplinary journal on Southeast Asia, with a strong focus on Indonesia. The editors especially welcome articles from anthropology, history, political science, law, sociology, social geography, development studies, urban studies, literature, socio-linguistics, and economics.
