Tom Hoogervorst has won the 2017 Young Scholars Prize, a biennial competition for original articles awarded by the international journal Indonesia and the Malay World. His submission, ‘What kind of language was ‘Chinese Malay’ in late-colonial Java?’, delves deeper into the complex and often politicized question of whether the island’s Chinese community had their own distinct variety of Malay. The article highlights several strategies they drew upon to mark ethnic difference through the spoken and written word. It will come out in the journal’s next issue.
